Not the best of the co-author novella series, but it’s the starter. There is world building to add in a short book. The wrap up of the mystery happened too fast, and I didn’t feel the explanation was enough though it was. I don’t know. Hard to explain. It felt as though it came out of left field.
I didn’t really feel the romance connection. Like there wasn’t that spark for the slow burn to come. We were told, but I didn’t feel it.
I think it was because the author wasn’t given enough word count to accomplish this. Another chapter or two and maybe this could have been really good.

What a great start to what I'm sure will be a fabulous new series! As always Kendra didn't disappoint with this excellent novella. The characters are wonderful and the storyline is beyond superb. This little novella has everything you can possibly want in a mystery/thriller. My only complaint is that it's not long enough. I would love for this series to be full length novels. It's just so damn good. But what do you expect it's Kendra freaking Elliot! I'm so, so excited for this series and to see where it takes us. I'm addicted already. If you are looking for a good mystery/thriller then check out this new series. Hell check out any book by Kendra Elliot. They are all fabulous!
*** Note to Kendra *** Are you and Melinda planning on doing kindle in motion with this series like you did with the Rogue series?

This story fails in its various genre attempts, but it's paced well-enough and the characters are interesting enough that it's enjoyable. Enough. I can't say it's a success as a mystery because the main characters solves literally nothing. I can't say it's a success as a romance because it ends before anything interesting has time to start.
What it delivers is an interesting locale populated by characters that were fun to get to know and just a little bit of the mystical for spice. Fortunately, it's also short so I didn't have time to wear myself out on the small-town/island thing. So I'm going to tag it with three stars and call it good, but not one I'll be eager to follow-up on.
A note about my romance tags: There's no romance, really, so no chaste or steam.

I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
FBI Special Agent Cate Wilde has come back home to Widow's Island after receiving a gun shot would. Cate's always had mixed feeling about her home, she loves the island, but it has a mix of good and bad memories. Her ending up in law enforcement is no coincidence. Cate, Tessa Black, who is now a local deputy and Samantha were a tight knit trio when they were teenagers. However, Samantha went missing when she was 13 and hasn't been seen since. Old memories are brought flooding back when the body of a teenage girl is discovered on the Island. Now, Cate and Tessa, as well as the new doctor in town, must investigate the possible crime. Could this be their missing best friend?
I love a good mystery! Which, is exactly what Kendra Elliot delivers in this novella. Close to the Bone is the first in the Widow's Island series which is co-authored by Kendra Elliot and Melinda Leigh. Melinda Leigh will be writing A Bone to Pick, the next book in the series. Each author writes from a different characters point of view as they help to solve crimes on the Widow's Island and look into the disappearance of their childhood friend Samantha.
This was a short read, about 100 pages, but in a such a short time it does a great job of introducing you not only to the characters but the atmosphere of the small island as well. All this whilst trying to solve the murder of an unidentified teenage girl. I enjoyed reading about the investigation and I loved that I didn't gues the whodunit until it was revealed by the author. Close to the Bone also has a little glimmer of romance in it as well between Cate and Henry, the doctor. I know the Elliot has another book out, book 3, next year and I look forward to seeing that relationship develop further .
This is a short, but very satisfying read and I can't wait to read more in this series. If you like a mystery, especially in small town settings, then I highly recommend you give this book a try.

FBI Special Agent Cate Wilde is summoned back home to a remote island in the Pacific Northwest (Widow's Island) because a teenager's skeletal remains have been found on an island nearby (Ruby's Island). Also on the case is Cate's old friend, county deputy Tessa Black. While they try to solve the case they are reminded of their good friend (Samantha) who vanished twenty years ago and who was never found, and the similarities in this case to that case.
This was a very captivating story/novella. It was the first in the "Widow's Island" series. I liked the atmospheric setting of the island and I found the people who lived there interesting. Some islanders even believed Ruby's Island had a ghost. I also liked the friendship between Cate and Tessa. There was a slight romance between Cate and the local doctor Henry, who I liked, but the main focus was on the mystery.
This was my first read by Kendra Elliot and I really enjoyed it. I liked the brief paranormal elements concerning the ghost Ruby and the backstory to how the islands got their names. I look forward to reading the next "Widow's Island" novella.
